4 DIY HACKS
To Save You Money
on Your Next Project

YouTube, apartmenttherapy.com, even Pinterest can inspire you with impressive paint colors or to build that bookshelf you’ve been putting off forever. After combing through the videos, blogs, and photos, you can’t wait to get started! But before you head to your local DIY store, let’s put your project into financial perspective. Otherwise, you might spend tens, hundreds, or even thousands of dollars more than you had planned before you realize you should have bought the thing or paid a professional to build it. Before you start on a new project (or finish an old one) there are 4 DIY Hacks to save you money on your next project.

Consider the scope of your project

What you will need, and where will you purchase your materials? Is this a DIY you can manage on your own, or will you need the help of your spouse, partner, a neighbor, or a friend?

Know your budget

It is a good idea to know ahead of time how much you can afford to spend on the project and ask yourself where you can save some money.

Once you know who will help you (if applicable) and what your budget is, here are 4 DIY Hacks that will save you some cash!

DIY Hacks to save you money: rebates, price matching, repurposing, and tool rental.

1. Rebates

Some of the best rebate and discount programs around cater to DIYers. Check with your local Home Depot. Their 11% Rebate program is perfect for saving you some cash. One downside is that the rebate does not apply to online purchases. Lowe’s rebates are item specific, and their online portal lets you submit and check your rebate status. In addition to the rollbacks at Walmart.com, you can sign up for their rewards program and earn 5% back on every purchase if you have a store credit card. 84 Lumber, in business since 1956, is still around and serving up a 10% (maximum $500 discount) to military and first responders.

Set a timer so you won’t get trapped in the internet rabbit hole.

2. Price Matching

Ace Hardware stores are franchises but give your local store a quick call or visit to find out if they price match. Menards offers 11% off items often and will also price match. Target does it (surprise!), and like Ace Hardware, True Value stores are independently owned, and they will, but at the owner’s discretion.

3. Repurpose

Pinterest is considered by many the king (or queen) of DIY repurposing ideas. Others prefer YouTube. Whatever your go-to platform, check your attic, your basement, and your garage before setting a budget. You might be surprised what you find and what you can repurpose, redesign, or upcycle.

4. Tool Rental

In the market for new tools, but don’t want to splurge? Try tool rental. Your local Home Depot or Lowe’s will get you and your project squared away. If instead you’re ready to drop the cash for new-to-you tools, Home Depot sells used tools, or a quick Google search for stores in your area, will yield lots of results. Get a warranty if you can or be aware of return policies if you buy from online retailers like eBay or Amazon.
